Team Building Priorities for Diamond, Pearl & Platinum
- Use the physical/special move split to choose attackers by stat and move access, not just typing.
- Plan for Cynthia's Garchomp and other late-game threats with Ice coverage, bulky checks, or reliable neutral damage.
- Watch Fire-type availability, especially in Diamond and Pearl. Coverage moves may need to substitute for a full Fire-type team member.
- Account for HM pressure. Defog, Rock Climb, Surf, Strength, and Rock Smash can crowd movesets quickly.
Starter & Core Pairing Notes
- Turtwig becomes a sturdy Ground option but needs Ice, Flying, and Fire coverage support.
- Chimchar solves many Fire scarcity issues and pairs well with Water and Electric partners.
- Piplup evolves into a strong defensive typing, so add Ground and Electric answers around it.
Diamond, Pearl & Platinum Team Planning FAQ
Why is Platinum team planning different from Diamond and Pearl?
Platinum improves availability and pacing, but the same Sinnoh concerns remain: HM pressure, late-game Dragon threats, and the importance of balanced coverage.
What types help against Cynthia in Sinnoh?
Ice coverage is the clearest answer to Garchomp, while Fairy does not exist in Gen 4. Strong Water, Fighting, and Electric coverage also help across her broader team.
Do I need a dedicated HM user in DPPT?
It is often useful because Sinnoh has many required HMs. Surf can belong on a core Pokemon, but Defog and Rock Climb are harder to justify on key attackers.
