Team Building Priorities for HeartGold & SoulSilver
- Build for two regions, not just the Johto badges. Long-term evolution timing and broad neutral coverage matter.
- Plan HM usage early. Whirlpool, Waterfall, Rock Climb, Surf, Fly, and Strength can put pressure on movesets.
- Do not ignore the level curve. Pokemon with slow growth or late evolution can feel underpowered during key stretches.
- Use the planner to avoid stacking common weaknesses before late-game Kanto and Mt. Silver fights.
Starter & Core Pairing Notes
- Chikorita teams need stronger early offense and Flying, Bug, Ice, and Poison answers.
- Cyndaquil offers clean Fire damage but needs Water, Electric, or Grass partners for Rock and Water matchups.
- Totodile is flexible and physical; add Electric or Grass coverage to handle opposing Water-types.
HeartGold & SoulSilver Team Planning FAQ
Why is team planning important in HeartGold and SoulSilver?
The game spans Johto and Kanto, so your team needs enough coverage and growth potential for a much longer journey than a typical single-region story.
How much HM planning does HGSS need?
A lot. Whirlpool, Waterfall, Rock Climb, Surf, Fly, Strength, Cut, and Rock Smash can all matter, so utility roles should be assigned intentionally.
Should I build specifically for Red?
If you plan to finish the post-game, yes. Red rewards durable team structure, strong neutral coverage, and answers to high-level threats.
