Team Building Priorities for Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald

  • Prepare for Water-heavy routes. Electric and Grass coverage are unusually valuable because Surf and Dive sections dominate the late game.
  • Respect abilities like Levitate and Intimidate. They can change defensive coverage in ways that simple type matching does not fully express.
  • Plan around a high HM burden. Surf, Dive, Waterfall, Rock Smash, Strength, Fly, and Cut can crowd a team quickly.
  • Keep Ice or Dragon coverage available for late-game Dragon threats, while maintaining answers to bulky Water-types.
🌱

Starter & Core Pairing Notes

  • Treecko teams should add Fire, Water, or Flying coverage early so the team is not too narrow against Steel, Bug, and Flying checks.
  • Torchic becomes a powerful mixed offensive anchor, but it appreciates Water and Electric partners for Hoenn's many sea routes.
  • Mudkip is one of the easiest starters to build around; add Grass or Electric answers to opposing Water-types and Flying coverage.

Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald Team Planning FAQ

Why do Hoenn teams need Electric or Grass coverage?

Hoenn has many Water-type routes and trainers, especially late in the game. Electric or Grass coverage keeps those sections from becoming slow or repetitive.

How many HM users do Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald teams need?

Usually at least one dedicated utility Pokemon helps. Surf is useful in battle, but Dive, Cut, Rock Smash, and Flash are often better assigned carefully.

Does Emerald change team planning compared with Ruby and Sapphire?

Emerald shifts some major battles and emphasizes different late-game Water matchups, so coverage against Water, Dragon, and Flying remains especially useful.
