Team Building Priorities for FireRed & LeafGreen
- Remember that physical and special categories are still type-based. This affects how Fire, Water, Electric, Psychic, and Normal attackers perform.
- Plan HMs around Kanto and the Sevii Islands. Surf, Fly, Strength, Cut, Rock Smash, and Waterfall can all matter.
- Use abilities to refine defensive coverage. Levitate, Intimidate, and status-related abilities can change how safe a matchup feels.
- Think beyond the first Elite Four if you plan to use post-game or National Dex options.
Starter & Core Pairing Notes
- Bulbasaur is comfortable early but wants Flying, Psychic, and Ice answers later.
- Charmander needs help into Rock and Water early, so add Water, Grass, or Electric coverage quickly.
- Squirtle is stable and HM-friendly; pair it with Electric immunity and Grass answers.
FireRed & LeafGreen Team Planning FAQ
Is FireRed and LeafGreen team building the same as RBY?
The region is similar, but Gen 3 abilities, natures, and move pools change how individual Pokemon perform. The physical/special split is still type-based.
Do the Sevii Islands matter for team planning?
They matter if you plan beyond the main story, because they expand access and add more reasons to think about long-term coverage.
Which HMs should I plan around in FRLG?
Surf and Fly are the most comfortable on core members. Cut, Rock Smash, and Flash are better handled by utility choices when possible.
