Team Building Priorities for Red, Blue & Yellow

  • Account for Psychic pressure early. Dark and Steel do not exist in these games, so bulky Normal-types, fast attackers, and smart coverage matter more than type counters alone.
  • Remember that physical and special damage are determined by move type, not the individual move. Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Psychic, and Dragon attacks use Special.
  • Keep Ground and Electric coverage in mind. These two attacking types solve many common Kanto matchups and help avoid over-relying on your starter.
  • Plan HM utility without sacrificing every core attacker. Surf is excellent in battle, while Cut and Flash are usually better assigned to support picks.
🌱

Starter & Core Pairing Notes

  • Bulbasaur eases early Rock and Water matchups but appreciates partners that handle Flying, Psychic, and Ice pressure.
  • Charmander teams should prioritize early Water, Electric, or Grass coverage so Rock- and Water-heavy sections do not slow the team down.
  • Squirtle gives reliable Surf value later, so pair it with answers to Electric and Grass while adding a strong Psychic or Normal attacker.
  • Yellow's Pikachu is useful but fragile; treat it as Electric coverage and build a sturdier backbone around it.

Red, Blue & Yellow Team Planning FAQ

What makes a balanced team in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow?

A balanced RBY team covers Psychic, Water, Ground, and Normal threats while keeping enough HM utility for the story. Because the type chart is older, raw stats and move availability matter as much as defensive synergy.

Why is Psychic coverage so important in Gen 1?

Psychic has very few defensive answers in RBY, and many Psychic Pokemon also benefit from the combined Special stat. Your planner should reveal whether your team has enough speed, bulk, or neutral damage to handle them.

Should I build around HM users in Kanto?

Yes, but do it selectively. Surf is often worth using on a core team member, while Cut and Flash are usually better placed on utility Pokemon.
