Team Building Priorities for Gold, Silver & Crystal
- Use the new Steel and Dark types to stabilize matchups that were awkward in Gen 1, especially against Psychic-heavy teams.
- Plan for a long two-region journey. A team that feels fine for Johto may still need better coverage and durability before Kanto and the late-game climb.
- Watch the level curve. Picking Pokemon that evolve late or require rare stones can make the mid-game feel thinner.
- Reserve space for Surf, Fly, Strength, Whirlpool, and Waterfall. HM pressure is not extreme, but it is constant.

- Chikorita benefits from teammates that handle Flying, Bug, Ice, and Poison because many early matchups pressure Grass.

What should I prioritize in a Pokemon Gold, Silver, or Crystal team?
Prioritize stable coverage for both Johto and Kanto, not just early gyms. A good GSC team has answers to Water, Flying, Psychic, and Rock while carrying the necessary HMs.
Do Steel and Dark change team building in Gen 2?
Yes. They give the team builder new ways to resist or pressure types that were harder to manage in Gen 1, especially Psychic.
Is HM planning important in Johto?
Yes. Whirlpool and Waterfall add extra utility pressure, so it helps to assign HMs intentionally instead of spreading weak moves across your main attackers.
