Team Building Priorities for X & Y
- Use Fairy typing to rethink Dragon matchups. Teams no longer need to rely only on Ice or Dragon coverage.
- Choose a Mega-capable Pokemon as a role, not just a favorite. Mega Evolution can change stats, abilities, and sometimes typing.
- Plan around two starter-style anchors if you use the gifted Kanto starter. Their weaknesses should not overlap too heavily.
- Because experience sharing is generous, rotating specialized coverage picks is easier than in older games.
Starter & Core Pairing Notes
- Chespin teams want Flying, Fire, Psychic, and Fairy answers as the line develops.
- Fennekin gives strong special offense and appreciates physical partners plus Water and Rock answers.
- Froakie is fast and flexible, so pair it with sturdier defensive pivots and Fairy or Electric coverage.
X & Y Team Planning FAQ
How does Fairy typing affect X and Y team building?
Fairy gives a direct answer to Dragon pressure and changes how teams handle Fighting and Dark matchups.
Should every X and Y team use Mega Evolution?
It is not mandatory, but the mechanic is strong enough that planning one Mega slot usually improves team identity.
How should I pair the Kalos and Kanto starters?
Pick starters whose weaknesses do not overlap too heavily, then use the planner to fill missing Electric, Ground, Fairy, or Flying coverage.
